Suwannee River Water Management District
Land Acquisition
Rule 40B-9.041(1), Florida Administrative Code – The District utilizes this process to acquire lands for conservation and water resource management purposes.
The District is committed to protecting and preserving the water resources of North Central Florida. The majority of District-owned fee and conservation easement lands are located along rivers and streams, in headwaters, and in areas of water recharge.
The Governing Board must approve all land purchases, subject to available funding. The District maintains a list of current projects that the Governing Board has ranked. Projects are completed as funding is identified and secured.
Land purchases are prioritized based on several factors, including the extent to which the land protects water resources, such as springs, wetlands, and streams; provides flood protection; may support water resource development projects; is adjacent to other District lands; or enhances current land management activities.
Land purchases and exchanges are prioritized relative to:
- The extent to which the lands provide protection for Outstanding Florida Springs, Priority Focus Areas, and other springs (either directly or indirectly);
- The extent to which the lands provide protection of surface waters (wetlands, lakes, springs, and streams);
- The extent to which the lands provide flood protection;
- The extent to which the lands are needed for implementation of water resource development projects, restoration, or other projects;
- The extent to which the lands benefit existing acquisition holdings; and
- The extent to which the lands enhance land management objectives.
